Greg Gorman: Star KC Photographer – Part I

On Friday, 16 March 2012, I was listening to KCUR’s Up To Date with guest host Brian Ellison. The interview was with Greg Gorman, native KC area star photographer. (see: KCUR Greg Gorman Interview). Gorman is a KC area home boy who attended Pembroke and Shawnee Mission East High School. “He majored in photojournalism at University of Kansas, then attended the University of Southern California where he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in cinematography in 1972.” (ASMP flyer)

Gorman makes a yearly trek back to his KC roots. He credits his midwestern upbringing with how he has been able to adjust up and down to the different personalities that he’s met over the years. His first photo was taken as a 17 year old at a Jimmy Hendricks concert. He borrowed a camera from a friend and developed the images.  He can’t remember now if the blurry image of Hendricks was a result of being such an amateur, or too much partying. It really didn’t matter, because as soon as he saw the depth of the blacks and the contrasts that appeared on the page – he was hooked, and the rest as they say, is Gorman’s story.

Gorman’s photographed so many iconic photos. He credits his success with being a control freak and also getting to know the talent before each shoot, so he can know which angles work best for that individual talent, since each talent is different. He’s a “star photographer” because he’s a star in the photography world plus he has taken so many photographs of Hollywood’s stars. Gorman gave a talk about his work at the Nelson Atkin Museum in affiliation with the Canon Explore Light lecture series, and the American Society of Media Professionals on Friday at 7 pm. The program was sponsored by Canon, X-rite Photo and H&H Color.

The audience enjoyed his candor and the rhythm of the evolving faces of celebrity photography over the years. Recognition is priceless! We were there with him, as he told the stories of one actor caught on film rolling a joint or another actor receiving a big roll over the phone during his photo shoot, or of the publisher that didn’t appreciate the effort it took for him to get a famous singer’s shot in the privacy of the singer’s own home. The mystery is in the shadows of Gorman’s images, and that mystery draws the attention of the audience inward.

I took some shots of Gorman. I sought his eyes with my lens. I caught him from my point of view. I also asked someone to take a shot of him with me. I was grateful for the shots. For more of his work, see: Greg Gorman website.

NEW BIG BIRD in TOWN

There’s a new bird in town at KCPT TV. This papier-mâché’d Big Bird was born on the creative tables of Reading Reptile “in swell Brookside Kansas City”. Debbie Pettid, is part owner and Reading Reptile’s own papier-mâché artist. Reading Reptile is KC’s oldest independent bookseller, and one of the leading children’s bookstores in the country.

KCPT staff had the honors of bringing the new creation (backward planked and beaked up) back to KCPT TV studios. You can see more of this season’s newest star during KCPT TV fundraising events. Take a sneak peak now to see how the delivery went.

We also saw some Edible Sculptures hand made in Kansas City. These treats made by Ay look more like glass blown sculptures, but it’s all candy and good enough to eat! This candy sculpting is called Amezaiku and the technique goes way back to ancient Japan. To learn more, go to JoyJoyConfections.com.

Good thing the studio is very kool at KCPT! Each week, KCPT’s production crew puts together the lights, set, camera and action for another round of KC Week In Review. GEN XL2 – Psyche Out Obesity!

Obesity is a local issue with a national footprint that Generation XL2 talks about.

” Join host Nick Haines in the studio with Dr. Leon Greene from the University of Kansas, and Ashley Davies and Jennifer Straub from PE4life, as they discuss breaking the cycle of childhood obesity through physical education.” (GenXL2 – kcpt.org)

Stik Figa is a local rapper who’s putting The Top (Topeka, Kansas) on the map (see AsToldBy Stik Figa ). His “Class of 2000” single is background music for this behind the scenes look at the set up and filming of  Generation XL2: Making the Grade for Physical Education.

No matter where you’re coming from in the KC area, getting the message to kids to lead fun and healthy lifestyles is all good! “We’re gonna work it out! …” (Stik Figa -Class  Of 2000).

The KCPT production crew had fun hanging panels, running cameras and all of the behind the scenes production for Nick and the guests. Here’s something you can do. Tell me how you like:

  1. This Gen XL2 slideshow,
  2. The Generation XL2: Making the Grade for Physical Education episode,
  3. Stik Figa’s music, and/or
  4. Using P.E. to psyche out obesity?

Summer @KCPT TV 2

What could be more fun than running cameras for the KCPT TV fund drive?

Running cameras with hosts Randy Mason and guests: Tony Ladesich, Joe Heyen, Danny Cox and Janet Bacus, who give us their memories of the hey daze days at the Cowtown Ballroom. These guests kept us in stitches as they reminded us of the great times at the Cowtown Ballroom that  featured talent like: Steve Miller, Frank Zappa (and some ugly dudes), Steve Martin, Alice Cooper and more.

When it came to KC talent in the early 70’s, the Cowtown was the place to find it. The documentary Sweet Jesus! filmed by Joe Heyen and  Anthony Ladesich had been featured on KCPT TV.

Check out the Sweet Jesus! trailer from YouTube.
